The Great “No Container” Challenge of 2010 – Robyn Takes On Josie!

After a scrumptious sushi feast that used no less than 8 foam and plastic containers (not including the plastic bags to carry it all in) Josie and I looked upon our pile of trash and with happy full sushi tummies declared….WTF!  We use too many takeout containers as a nation, and so Josie and I are going to do our part to put an end to the madness.  Did you know that in Germany you have to PAY for takeout containers and then you have to PAY again to recycle them?  This is unconfirmed as someone told Josie and so far my Googling has turned up nothing.  Even if it’s a myth it’s a good idea and i hope that it’s true.  Let’s all do our part to say NO to filling our landfills with useless waste.  Bring your own cup to Starbucks (or at least make and use your own sleeve, fun!), bring a few empty containers when you know you’re going to have takeout.  Say NO to the plastic bag Subway forces upon you even if you are only carrying your sandwich a few feet away to a table in the food court.  Try a tiffin!  That’s fun to say and environmentally conscious!

If you MUST use a takeout container think about getting all your food in one box, instead of many, and when you’re done re-use…

DIY gift basket <– ok, i am not a fan of this particular finished product but i’m sure one could come up with something similar and a bit more stellar.

So, the challenge is on, first to use a takeout container or cup LOSES and is the LOSER.  Game on!

UPDATE:  Did I Lose Already?

It’s up to Josie but I want you vote!

Here are the facts:

Yesterday Jenn txt’d to say she was going to go get takeout, did i want to join?

I was at home when the text came through

When we got to the restaurant (Noodle Box….mmmmm) and i realized what was about to happen i made Jenn pay so i wasn’t to blame

I thought about adding vegan potstickers to the order but didn’t, because it would be another container

I wore the takeout box as a hat the rest of the evening so that it wouldn’t have been used in vain

The hat thing was not true.

Again, Josie will make the final call, but maybe you could sway her…….

Great promo for this campaign but remember take out containers are usually designed to breakdown at some point and I hear not very safe to re-use for too long and at high temperatures.
Whoot whoot – waste less! I’ve been looking for cool travel lunch/dinner containers on the internet for a while now. Let me know if you find some good ones. The Bento boxes are cute but I wonder how safe they are?
Easiest trick for most everyone to do is put the sleeve from their next coffee in their wallet or purse to use next time.

Yeah, i wouldn’t recommend re-using takeout containers for lunches…glass is best for sure!

I almost lost on day one! Leaving my coffee mug (filled with the coffee i neeeeeded this AM!) on my kitchen counter, i arrived at work to find that the office i was at only had paper cups! WTF?!? After a hunt i located a regular coffee mug and was able to fulfill my need for java…phew!
