FanFuckingFRINGE-Tastic: A Whole Lot of Horrible…..Most of it Awesome.

And some that was just horrible.  First off i would like to paint you a picture of why i take Fringe off as a vacation.  I am currently sitting on my balcony (which has an amazing view of Sunset Beach, and a glimpse of Granville Island) which never happens at 1pm on a work day.  I am also wearing my ‘No Moleste’ t-shirt and ripped (fashionably shredded) jeans, which i would not be able to wear to work.  Oh, and i am drinking a beer….certainly frowned upon, at work.  Ahhh, Fringe vacation.

Dr Horrible: Sing Along Blog

So I had no idea what this was going in.  All i knew was that i love the Firehall as a venue because the outdoor bar is rad.  Turns out this is the stage production of what Joss Whedon (Buffy, Firefly) wrote during the writers strike of 2008 and it was HILARIOUS!  Ironic, cheesy musicals are right up my alley and boy did this one deliver.  SPOILER (not really): The live feed really is live.  I am a dork.  The one and only thing that i could critique was the lead chick, not sure but i would have liked the Asian from the chorus to have had a shot….sorry. (i hate saying anything remotely critical in my critiques!).

Pretending Things Are a Cock

Ok, the premise is bang on (bang..hehehehe).  Especially for me and Ange because, we are….totally immature some of the time.  Also we like cute boys, and especially cute boys with accents.  So how could a show about a dude (an Australian dude!!) pretending things are a cock (a cock!!) go wrong?!?!  Well in my opinion (i’m sorry!!!) they went horribly wrong (and not in a great, Dr. Horrible way…i’m sorry!!!).  OK, the pictures of Jon pretending things are a cock are funny, but some are hard to see and they go by too fast.  And then there are the stories….for every 4th picture or so Jon relates a story from his childhood.  This is his attempt to explain who he is and why he does what he does.  Again, tripping along thinking, “OK, he’s cute, his stories will be cute!”  but they are not.  They are disturbing and gross and awkward.  They left me thinking “i did not want, nor need, to hear that” and then BANG, into the next cock picture.  Freud?  Freuds Ego?  Where are you when i need you?  We did walk out thinking that Jon was likable, that his timing was pretty good, and that we hope he hones his skills into something less….or maybe more……something else.  Perhaps he could pull from  ‘Jons’ Comedy’ journal (stuff he wrote when he was a teenager) because that shit was funny!!  All that being said, you are not me and i am not you.  Give it a go and come see me at the Fringe Club to discuss.  Cocks.  Hehehehe.

Oh the Humanity! And Other Good Intentions

Every year there is a bizarre little gem that i amaze at while in the front row of the Carousel theater.  One year it was “Lazy Susan”, last year it was the fringe of the Fringe show “Circus”, and this year it is “Oh the Humanity”.  Weird and awesome, just how me likesey. (Should i not do that?!?  what do you think?) The cast of 2 carried off the fast paced script about things that are somewhat horrible (yup, title tie in yo) with ease and i was left feeling “What the?!?!  Fuck yeah!”  and if you know me at all you will know that is one of my very most favorite ways to feel.  I don’t know how to describe this show except to say “go” … oh and there’s a bar!

The DK and Morgan Show

We Fringers have been spoiled by kick ass sketch comedy year over year.  The Pajama Men, Cody Rivers Show, Canadian Content so a new sketch comedy team really has their work cut out for them.  And i’m sorry, but with the exception of a few moments here and there and Alex eating a crayon (ALEX ATE A CRAYON) DK and Morgan just didn’t make mustre (is that a thing?!?  i like it and i’m using it).  Maybe next year guys!!!

Oh and this is Ange’s review, as drunkenly recorded on my iPhone last night at the Fringe Club:  “What is this thing?  Like what is this thing all together?  If someone were to say “hey you go write a show!” that’s pretty much what i think i would come up with, with no experience.  I mean most of it, there were some parts that were better than others but still i could write that.  And that’s not saying much”  Sweet Ange.  Sweet.

Ok, and now a review of a show i have not yet seen.  I know that’s not how it is generally done but i promised my friend Garry i would review his show and i haven’t been able to work it in yet and i want people to take my sketchy word for it and go see the show before it’s too late.  If you think that run on senstence was amazing then you’ll love what’s coming next.

Without further ado, the fake review:

Doctor Marigold

1. Garry is super funny in person, even when not trying to be.  i am not sure if the show is funny or is supposed to be funny….but Garry is super funny in person.

2. His show last year was awesome!  And i am not just saying that because it was about Jesus and we all know that JC is my main Home-ie.

3. John really liked the show, and John, being English, has impeccable taste.  Obviously.  VanChick, being not English has a pretty liberal use of the comma.

4. This is what Garry had to say about his own show when asked “How do you think it’s going so far?”

Garry: “It’s best not to think about that”

5. It’s got a pretty damn good review.  From a real reviewer.  Who saw the show!  Now go!

FanFuckingFRINGE-Tastic: What I’ve Seen So Far

Wow, it seems like yesterday that it was only day 1 of the Fringe.  And only the day before that it was just gearing up.  Already it’s day 6, which means we’re more than half way done.  Ok, not going to think about that or i’ll be too sad to enjoy “Dr. Horrible – Sing Along Blog” tonite at the Firehall.

So what have i seen so far and should you try to see them too?  Goddamn it is so subjective.  What my *Frunk friend Carrie gave a “meh” to i saw last night and gave a “meh….GNIFICINT!” to.  So who knows.  Take my word for it.  Don’t.  Come see me at the Fringe Club to discuss.  Ok?

I saw Jon do this one man show at the Fringe Club a few years ago and was smitten.  The show is weird and dark, which i love.  Jon is pitch perfect in the role, which i love…of course.  The atmosphere was especially Fringey as it was an impromptu, packed to the rafters event which happened….in the dark.  Yup, all the lights went out and we watched by candle and flashlight…light**  So I had high expectation-memories going in, and they were met with open arms and a lick on the cheek (this is me refrencing the weirdness of the show yo).  My “plus 1” for the night also really enjoyed the show and he had no fond Frigey memories to scew his enjoyment levels.  So, if you are a fan of high energy, oddball monologues with cool lighting and a moment where you think a prop could malfunction and you could walk away with a head injury….and why wouldn’t you….then PLEASE GO SEE THIS SHOW!

What You Want

Andrew Templeton wrote Biographies of the Dead and Dying last year, which was one of my fave’s of the fest.  Andrew also wrote What You Want, and what he want’s is for you to know it.  Interesting perspective, witty dialog, and a stellar cast make this a must see.  Ignore the lame picture of a duck, the show is much more interesting.

Every Job I’ve Ever Had

Ever thought your life was funny enough and interesting enough to create a Power Point presentation about it and tour it across Canada, charging complete strangers money to come hear about it?  No?  Good.  But I am glad Barry did, still does, and really is that funny and interesting.  Seriously, Barry is just freaking hilarious.  I have seen all of his shows except one and am a Barry Groupie for sure.  Go See Barry and learn everything you didn’t know you wanted to know about Every Job He’s Ever Had (there have been a lot).

Sept 15 – 830pm

Sept 16 – 5pm

Sept 19 – 935pm

Ok, i was trying to do this in order of when i saw what but all the wine*** between shows is making it all fuzzy.  So, in no particular order (except in the particular order that they are mentioned in Fringe Guide) –

7(X1) Samurai

Ok, so i had gotten very little sleep the night before, and the theater was so dark and warm….and yeah, i pretty much slept through the whole thing.  SORRY!  What i can say is that the rest of the well rested audience was eating this shit up and dying of laughter.  Pretty good for a mime, i’d say.

Poison The Well

Wow.  I didn’t understand everything that was going on but i think i understood enough.  I am used to seeing Andew Conner as part of Cody Rivers and so to see him in such a serious role was odd.  But his writing was amazing and Elison as Maya simply blew me away (and not just because of her hair, but damn does she have cute hair).  I think that the end could have been tightened up and some of the symbolism was lost on me (and i wasn’t even hammered.  Yet).  Also good to know…fellow Frunk Siobhan shed a tear.

Misadventures of a Massage Therapist

So, by now you are thinking “can we trust these so called reviews?!?!  She seems to like everything!!!  She said she wasn’t hammered during Poison the Well (good thing, that would have been highly inappropriate) but can we believe her?”  Well i haven’t liked everything.  Case in point.  Sorry Jason but i just didn’t think your stories were funny enough.  I thought they were ok, and stories – if happened to me – i would tell my friends….but Fringe show worthy?  Not so much.  At least in my opinion.  That being said, Jason seemed like a fun guy to hang with so maybe i’ll see if i can buy him a drink at the Fringe Club later.  Then i’ll do something so hilarious he’ll already have better material for next year.

When Harry Met Harry

I saw this show on the same day i saw 7(X1) Samurai and couldn’t keep my eyes open.  Before attending this production i pounded a coffee (no boozy rockstars around) and felt mildly better going in.  So, what did i think?  I don’t know.  The “story” was kind of interesting.  The characters were kind of interesting.  It was ok.  That’s all i have to say.  Go see it for yourself and then come find me at the Club to tell me what you thought.

Things That Never Happen

Jenn and i saw the massage therapist one on Jenn’s Fringe Choice Night – and so she needed to redeem herself.  AND SHE SO DID!  What a pick JennyFoo!  Travis the magician is funny, engaging, accomplished with slight of hand and suggestion, and….shhhhh…..REALLY, ACTUALLY, MAGIC!  How the eff else could he do what he does!??!?  Go see this show now.  And sit in the front row.  Or we’re not friends any more.  Not even Facebook friends.  That’s harsh i know but i am doing it for your own good.  Like when The Henderson’s told Harry they no longer loved him.

Moving Along

The only show so far that i have given a standing O to (not as thrilling as a lying down O…hehehe) because it was simply amazing.  Similar writing style to House (fast and seemingly disjointed), played out by a brilliant performer (Chris Craddock)

The Lover

Well, i have to see more Harold Pinter.  Crazy and awesome.  Blue Velvet-esque.  Performed vividly by the 2 person cast…in someone’s apartment!  That’s right kids…in true Fringe fashion when you see this show you meet at Max’s Deli on Oak St and then are escorted into a 1 bedroom nearby.  Here you sit in the living room and watch the crazy unfold.  I was slightly distracted by the woredrobe….but not by the milk jug humping.  I’m weird like that.

*Frunk is a word that if you know what it means you know what it means.  If not don’t worry about it.  Frunks are awesome.

**That would have been easier to type, read, say in a British blog.  It would have said “….by candle and torch light”

***Yes, wine.  As i cannot drink regular beer (muther effing gluten goddammitt) i have been drinking wine.  😛

I’m Back Baby!

So here’s the thing.  After falling off the Eating Clean August wagon and then clawing my way back on i decided to just hop off.  I don’t think cleanses and challenges like that are for me.  They don’t really suite my personality.  Pretty much, if i know it’s not forever or i am not going all in i just can’t make the commitment for now.  Seems pointless.  That’s why when i lost a bunch of weight i lost a bunch of weight.  Why when i went vegan i didn’t go vegetarian first.  Why i have never been able to cut back on smoking, it’s always been either i smoke or i don’t (and by the way, i still don’t!).  Also the voice inside my head was shouting “you already don’t eat meat and dairy and gluten and you’ve cut back on soy…..are you kidding me with this sugar free thing?”  I got sick of listening to the shouting and so said “fine, fuck it.  Give me a cookie”.  So i spent the rest of August eating what i wanted (out of what i could) and enjoying the Summer.  Went to Hornby Island (a miracle of a place, everyone should go.  They make sunscreen out of seaweed for fuck sakes!), and just generally chilled.  September has been a blast, first with Bumbershoot (from which i still have bruises from the mosh pit at LMFAO) and now with FRINGE!  So…that was my “hello, it’s been awhile, hope you are all doing fab” post – now over to FanFuckingFringeTastic!
