Big UPs and Mad Props! What Makes Me Glow, From My Head to My Toes

Or actually, from toe to head…

Adrienne is the queen of pedi’s….and i’m sure mani’s and waxi’s and everything else she does but for me it’s all about the toes.  From Ninja’s to Mustachioed Bananas, cherries to zebra stripes, Adrienne never hesitates to create 10 little masterpieces for me to love and adore.

Lucia is the namesake of this salon on Broadway (and now open downtown!) and boy howdy does this lady know how to rock a Brazilian.  The first time i went all bare down there i was nervous as hell, but Lucia was warm, gracious, funny, and above all…fast!  Even while humming a tune, telling jokes, stopping to gaze at the ceiling to remember a thought, Lucia has you in and out within 15 minutes, you barely (hehe) have time to get nervous or feel pain! And although the Queen herself is my favorite she has trained many other women in the art of the….rip.  Check them out, you won’t be sorry!

I ♥ The Y

1) The facility is enormous, and clean.  Also you can pay to have a tote to leave your shoes there so you don’t have to carry them around.  The only downside? After months i sill get lost in the change rooms.  2) The classes are fab! From Dancefit with Johanna Ward to Cardio Kickboxing to my personal fave Yin Yoga with Angie, there is something for everyone. 3) Free nuts and appreciation!  Sometimes in the lobby there is a big sign that says “We appreciate you!” with little cups of nuts and berries.  How sweet. 4) The staff is fun, friendly, and energetic. 5) Everyone goes to the Y, except gym monkeys!  From skinny yoga bum girls to middle aged ladies, to old men who love Johanna’s class,  everyone fits in.  Except creepy over muscled dudes with bad tans!  Too bad 😦

So far every facial i have had at Skoah has been amazing.  I will continue to come here for several reasons.  The ambiance strikes a wonderful balance between warm and inviting and clean and clinical.  They say they’re not “spa-y” but the rooms are warm and cozy and have soft music playing.  The products (if you can get over the fact that they replace all their C’s with K’s) smell amazing and really work.  They make a point of encouraging loyalty.  The last time i was there i was given a free shampoo sample and every time you re-book within 2 months you receive money off product.  Also they send you a thank you email the day after your treatment.  They don’t push the products on you the way some spas do.  They simply make recommendations and leave you be.  The staff and business really seem to care about healthy glowing skin. It’s apparent from the obviously knowledgeable staff and the quality of the products.  And last…the messages…mmmmm the massages…..

Yes she is one of my bestest besties but when i say Josie is a hair goddess i mean it.  She took a gawd awful head of thick frizzy choppily colored mess and has transformed it time and time again.  From black to blond to red, with every color highlight of the rainbow.  From extensions to shaved designs Josie helps me show my creativity through my hair.  If it wasn’t for her collaboration i wouldn’t be nearly as fulfilled as a person as i am.

So those are the businesses and the people who make me feel pretty from top to bottom.  Thanks Ya’ll!

If I Could Have a Superpower It Would Be…

psychically determining if an avocado is good or not.

Seriously!  Is it not the ultimate disappointment to find out the avocado that seemed so perfectly squishy yet firm is in fact all mushy and brown inside???  Does it not make your heart sing to open an avacado and find a perfectly green and easily cuttable interior?  And on the same token does it not break your heart to think an avocado is ripe and ready and instead find the dead and hopeless remains of an avocado past its due date?

I rest my case.

Warning! New Zodiac Can Make You a Douche Bag!

So apparently there is a possibility everything we know and believe in is bunk.  I’m not talking the existence of Christ, i’m talking whether or not your compatible with your boyfriendAstrology. I’m not here however to discuss the new sign, i’m writing for a much more important reason.  Forget about becoming a serpent holder or whatever the eff the 13th sign is, watch out for becoming a jerk to your friends!

Conversation i had today with 2 of my best girl friends:

Van Chick: “There is no way i’m a pussy water sign like Pisces”
C: “Yeah, Pisces are said to be loners….”
J: “Fuck you guys, i’m a Pisces!”

Oops. But proof the new zodiac is bunk.  Here is a description of Pisces:

Imaginative and sensitive
Compassionate and kind
Selfless and unworldly
Intuitive and sympathetic
Escapist and idealistic
Secretive and vague
Weak-willed and easily led

And now Aries:

Adventurous and energetic
Pioneering and courageous
Enthusiastic and confident
Dynamic and quick-witted
Selfish and quick-tempered
Impulsive and impatient
Foolhardy and daredevil

A sensitive Pisces would never have inadvertently called her friend a pussy.  This was obviously the work of an impulsive Aries.

Anyway, here are the new signs, what do you think?

Capricorn: Jan. 20 – Feb. 16
Aquarius: Feb. 16 – March 11
Pisces: March 11- April 18
Aries: April 18- May 13
Taurus: May 13- June 21
Gemini: June 21- July 20
Cancer: July 20- Aug. 10
Leo: Aug. 10- Sept. 16
Virgo: Sept. 16- Oct. 30
Libra: Oct. 30- Nov. 23
Scorpio: Nov. 23- Nov. 29
Ophiuchus: Nov. 29- Dec. 17
Sagittarius: Dec. 17- Jan. 20

Just had to share…..

I saw this note on the now closed The Corner Suite Bistro De Luxe window last Saturday morning:

it just made me so sad to think of someone, who had risked everything to try their dream have it fail.  I know it happens all the time but that didn’t make this any less heatbreaking.  I never patronized (is that the right word for this context?) Bistro De Luxe as it didn’t really have much in the way of vegan menu items but i had once emailed them (i think they were on a Groupon or the like) and the woman who answered was lovely and said that if we gave advance notice the chef would do his best, nice!  Also i loved their decor and the morning sign outside trying to entice you in for breakfast or espresso always made me smile.

On Monday morning i saw this taped up next to the first note:

and it almost made me cry.  Even though the owners could not make it work, they were loved and appreciated for what they did do in their community.  Maybe they’ll take what they’ve learned and give it another go one day.

Anyway, that’s it, just wanted to share something that made me feel sad and happy and hopeful, when usually mornings just make me feel rushed and cranky 🙂

Peace out peeps.

UPDATED Gotsta Love Me Some Globes! Only 3 days left!

I love movies.  I love how they make me think, laugh, fall in love with the characters.  I love it when films twist and turn in ways that make me say “how did the author think that up?!?!”.  Every year the best films of the past 12 months are celebrated by way of the Academy Awards and the Golden Globes and every year i try to watch every movie nominated for an Oscar in a major category.  Once the GG’s winners are picked i madly start the race which keeps me at home and in movie theaters for most of January and February.  This year a trip to India puts me at a slight handicap but i still have high hopes!  I will even attempt to watch more foreign and docs than ever before….ready set go!

Update:  Found a website that lists Entertainment Weekly’s Top 25 Movies to See Before the Oscars.  So far i’ve seen 12 with plans to see at least 4 more before the Globes on Sunday.

Golden Globe Nominees
I have bolded the films i have seen and will pick a winner once i have seen them all.

BEST MOTION PICTURE, DRAMA
Black Swan
The Fighter
Inception
The King’s Speech
The Social Network
Wow, kicking ass here!  So far my vote goes to Black Swan.  The Fighter was good but lost me near the end whereas Black Swan simply MESMERIZED me from start to finish.  I couldn’t take my eyes off the screen.  Inception was interesting and well done but was by no means best film.  The Social Network was also good except for the crazy score by Trent Reznor which didn’t make any kind of sense….

OK, The Kings Speech was AMAZING and deserves it’s own page…..CLICK! Also it get’s my vote for best picture.  Lucky it.

BEST ACTRESS, MOTION PICTURE DRAMA
Halle Berry, Frankie and Alice
Nicole Kidman, Rabbit Hole
Jennifer Lawrence, Winter’s Bone
Natalie Portman, Black Swan
Michelle Williams, Blue Valentine
Of course Nicole was excellent, she always is…but i’m sorry, i am so not a fan of “after the tragedy” movies.  Wow, this category is full of laughs.  Just saw Winter’s Bone, about a teenager who looks after her catatonic mother and 2 small siblings….while looking for her crack cooking father amongst inbred rednecks in the Ozarks.  Yup, depressing as fuck.  Not sure what i thought yet but it is true Jennifer Lawrence was superb.

BEST ACTOR, MOTION PICTURE DRAMA
Jesse Eisenberg, The Social Network
Colin Firth, The King’s Speech
James Franco, 127 Hours
Ryan Gosling, Blue Valentine
Mark Wahlberg, The Fighter
Ok, maybe i am way off base but all through The Fighter i kept thinking….can Mark W really act???  Really?  Are we all going to wake up one day and say WTF were we thinking?

Ok, wow.  WOW, Colin Firth was outstanding.  Simply breathtaking.  My vote goes to Marky Mark.  Juuuuuust kidding.

James Franco did a marvelous job, in a movie that was about 10 times less boring than Barney’s Version and it was literally, about nothing….

And the winner is ….. Colin Firth!  We’ll see if the GG’s agree….

BEST MOTION PICTURE, COMEDY / MUSICAL
Alice in Wonderland
Burlesque
The Kids Are All Right
Red
The Tourist
Burlesque?  Really?  Ok, I secretly wanted to see it and now i have to!  Thanks Golden Globes! – Just saw Burlesque and i really liked it!  Although totally cliche and the first scene is a groaner it develops into a touching, funny, well written movie with a ton of talent.  The dancing, while not Burlesque in it’s truest sense was less Pussy Cat Dolls “Burlesque” than i thought it would be.  There was a fan dance after all. Cher was fantabulous, of course.  She was funny and warm and although a tad on the odd looking side Ange and i decided she is Cher after all, she can look a but odd and still look amazing. Oh, and the scene with Cam Gigandet in his jammies was worth the price of admission.

The Tourist…..BIT OF A SPOILER…….are we not supposed to get “the twist” in the first few minutes!?!?  Other than that…i fell asleep.

RED: Well, i LOVE John Malkovich and Morgan Freeman and it was fun (for awhile) to watch those 2 plus Helen Mirrin (who has a rocking beach bod BTW…Big Ups HM!) kick ass as retired CIA agents the premise was not enough to carry an entire movie.  The action sequences were lacking and the plot had too many holes.  Oh well.

So my pick is……Alice in Wonderland i suppose, although that last Johnny Depp scene nearly ruined it for me.

Yum.

BEST ACTRESS, MOTION PICTURE COMEDY / MUSICAL
Annette Benning, The Kids Are All Right
Anne Hathaway, Love and Other Drugs
Angelina Jolie, The Tourist
Julianne Moore, The Kids Are All Right
Emma Stone, Easy A
So far my vote goes to Annette Benning….I think…or Emma Stone.  She’s radical and makes me feel like i have a pocket full of sunshine.

BEST ACTOR, MOTION PICTURE COMEDY / MUSICAL
Johnny Depp, Alice in Wonderland
Johnny Depp, The Tourist
Paul Giamatti — Barney’s Version
Jake Gyllenhaal, Love and Other Drugs
Kevin Spacey — Casino Jack

I’m reserving judgment until i see Casino Jack and Barney’s Version.  I just cannot get this **possible Alice in Wonderland Spoiler** out of my head!

Ok, i’ve seen em all….and I think it’s Kevin Spacey for me!

BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESSS, MOTION PICTURE DRAMA
Amy Adams, The Fighter
Helena Bonham-Carter, The King’s Speech
Mila Kunis, Black Swan
Melissa Leo, The Fighter
Jackie Weaver, Animal Kingdom
Mila Kunis should not have been nominated, in my opinion.  But enough of the hating, i think i’m voting Amy so far.  She has watery looking eyes which makes you really believe what she is saying, do you know what i mean?  Am a a nutter?  Whatever, I will probably change to Helena once i see The Kings Speech anyway.  Yup.  Helena ruled.  Literally, as the Queen Mum and wife of a struggling King.  Also who knew that one of the hottest  new ‘Do’s of the year originated with a 20’s Dutchess?

BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR, MOTION PICTURE DRAMA
Christian Bale, The Fighter
Michael Douglas, Wall Street 2
Andrew Garfield, The Social Network
Jeremey Renner, The Town
Geoffrey Rush, The King’s Speech
Holy fuck Christian Bale was awesome.  AWESOME.  Ok, so was Geoffrey, playing the bromantic love interest to a king.  In my opinion Geoffrey should be nominated alongside Colin Firth as best actor but my vote on this one still goes to Christian.

BEST FOREIGN LANGUAGE FILM
Biutiful (Mexico & Spain)
The Concert (France)
I Am Love (Italy)
In A Better World (Denmark)

BEST ANIMATED
Despicable Me
How to Train Your Dragon
The Illusionist
Tangled
Toy Story 3
Yup, TS3 was pretty cute.  Of course, i fell asleep in the big action sequence but other than that i thoroughly enjoyed it.  Although, as every kid i have spoken with this year knows…I LOVED CLOUDY WITH A CHANCE OF MEATBALLS!  WHY WASN’T IT NOMINATED!!?!? Wait, was that 2009?

Sunday is the big day!  Who will win??!?!  What will they wear?!?!  Oh so exciting! Ima dork!
