Arrrrrg, it’s fun to be a pirate!

Have you ever stolen movies, books, and music?  Come on, even once?   I think that in this day and age everyone is doing it…..and is it so wrong?

Read this article, read my few thoughts, and then let’s have a comment discussion shall we?

The Article:

Why I Steal Movies, Even Ones I Am In <– it’s funny, read it.

My thoughts:

Books. I don’t think i will ever download an ebook, whether stolen or purchased.  I love carrying around my paperback.  I love breaking the spine by bending the pages to hold it in one hand.  I love dog-earring, it makes my spot easy to find, no muss or fuss with book-marks, it makes the pages thicker, worn in, loved.  I love getting my book messy.  A little water, some sauce sprinkled here and there, a grass stain or two?  By the end of the book you know my book was read.   About the closest technology gets to my books is when i use my iphone to hold it down when i read while eating.

**now that no one will ever lend me a book again i may have to resort to stealing.

Music. I used to buy cassette tapes.  Then one day i learned the magic trick of putting a small piece of scotch tape over the little squares at the top of the cassette and viola, my first foray into stealing music was born. I spent hours recording the radio, paying attention to press pause whenever the DJ’s spoke or an ad came on.  Tedious as fuck but now i had my own mixes!  And sometimes my own voice as the DJ…but that’s a different story.  After the decline of cassettes there were CD’s, and no way to steal the music besides the old fashioned way and those little squares of theft protection on every disk really didn’t allow for that, not that i would have done it anyway.  Then came the internet and we all went mad.  I went mad, but have since become a little bit saner.  Yup, i still like to check out a new band through the magic of free samples however now i tend to go on over to itunes and purchase the album if i really like it.  This seems fair, right?  Here’s a little story that i feel justifies what i do.  Awhile ago i heard a song though my digital music on Shaw cable (let me know if you need digital cable!) that i loved.  When i saw the band was coming to the Commodore i wanted to know if i liked the band enough to go (they don’t allow in and out anymore at the Commodore, nor do they provide vegan food options so i really have to like the band to want to be trapped in there for hours and hours).   So i downloaded the album, and loved it.  I bought the tickets, loved the show (all while starving and needing to smoke) and then promptly bought the album when i got home.  Win-Win.  The band was Florence and the Machine and you should check them out (it’s up to you how), Florence is a goddess.  CD’s are bulky and a waste of plastic and i don’t like them.  Downloading allows me to both check out new bands, and then support them if i really like them.  Does anyone expect anyone to hear 1 song, or see an article, or go off a recommendation of a friend and then buy the whole album?  Are we millionaires?  Anyway….on to…..

Movies. Now this is a bit of a conundrum.  I love movies, but they are so goddamn expensive, either to rent or to see at the theater.  Movie makers, at least the ones producing box office contenders, make shit-tonnes of money.  Sometimes i cannot find a movie i want to see, it’s not playing here and the video store does not carry it.  Sometimes it’s 10pm and i have a hankering to watch Flashdance, i’m already in my PJ’s and have a late fee from 5 years ago at the video store….what to do?  I will never stop going to the theater.  I love the ritual of it (pay, pee, popcorn, phone off) and enjoy seeing films on the big screen, now that i have found a dairy-free version of Glossette Raisins my popcorn is complete.  But what about the video store?  Video on Demand (again, if you don’t have a digital box let me know!) is great, i can stay in my PJ’s, don’t have to worry about that late fee, and someone get’s paid.  Recently though i could not find a movie i wanted to see online or on VOD (Food Inc, highly recommended) and so i visited my local independent video store.  It was amazing and brought me back to the days when i loved going into Silver Screen in Kelowna, before movies were a click away.  Browsing the isles, seeing movies i loved and smiling at the memories of the love, adventure, laughs, discussing movies with real live PEOPLE who were also out of their homes and doing things the old fashioned way.  So my recommendation on movies?  Until the salaries of the people who make them make a little more sense, don’t feel too bad about borrowing a blockbuster.  Perhaps think twice about searching for hours for that documentary or independent film.  Go out into the world a little bit more, find a movie store and pay the $5 to see a film that may change your life.  And you cannot throw popcorn at your friends during or discuss the film with them after when sitting on your couch all by yourself.

Deception

This is exactly the kind of movie my high school BF and i loved to rent.  We could get away with letting people believe we were in it for the twisted plot but really it was all about the sex!  Well Red Shoe Diaries this movie was not.  As i am not 16 anymore and so have a) had sex and b) have access to actual porn i am now looking for a bit of an interesting plot and some good acting to go with the nakedness.  While watching Ewan McGregor fail at an American accent next to smarmy Hugh Jackman nailing his accent was fun for about 5 minutes the rest of the movie was crap.  The good news is that if you watched it you now have the pleasure of reading this kick ass thread on the IMDB message board.  Almost made it worth it.

100 Things Learned from Deception <– big time spoilers, if you can “spoil” such a crap film…..

Love Happens

and not much else.  The only redeemer in this movie was that there was a slow clap, which was funny, but sadly wasn’t meant to be.  Too many overly drawn  out “emotional” moments which i could have cared less about.  Am i heartless?  No, i am not.  So there.

Anyway, if you are thinking of watching this movie i emplore you to do something else, like your laundry, which is what i should have done this morning.

Killing Time on Apple Trailers

Sex and the City 2……i cannot WAIT for this movie because i am a huge SATC DORK!  I will be laughing and crying and jumping up and down in my seat.  Wanna come with?

The Other Guys…..will Marky Mark hold his own?  Can the Rock replace the image in my mind of him in a tutu?  Does Samuel L Jackson kick some muther f***ing ass?  Is Will Farell the shiznit?  I hope so, i really hope so, f*** yes, and dude….yes.

Malice in Wonderland……the trailer sucks big time but i am still hoping for radness

Iron Man 2….RDJ, you just keep doin’ that thing that you do so well….  Also LOVE Sam Rockwell and of course Samuel L Jackson so this should be rad.  Weird when another actor plays a character from the 1st installment (Howard to Cheadle) – not as weird as The New Kids on the Block on my TV right now doing a medley and that NKOTB dance move….seriously guys, so sad.

Salt….lame name, but Angelina is still the hottest so whatev.

Eat Pray Love….i’m torn.  i loved the book but i am terrified by Julia Roberts giant forehead vein.

Bluebeard….looks creeptastically neaterific.

In My Sleep…..cool concept, crap movie.  Yup i know this from the trailer because it GIVES EVERYTHING AWAY!  Feckin trailers that give everything away. goddammit.

Scott Pilgrim Vs the World….An Epic of Epic Epicness.  That’s the tag line, hope it’s lives up.

ok, i have to go to bed now…..

Iron Man, this chick is smitten.

With the upcoming release of Iron Man 2 i figured i should watch the first.  And it kicked ass!

Reason’s Why Iron Man was Awesome:

1. Robert muther effin Downey Jr.:  Epitome of bad boy you want to date.  Even the skeezy mustache did not deter my lust for this character.  Rich as fuck, doesn’t give a fuck, completely fuckable.  Sorry for the language.

2. The score:  KICK ASS AWESOME!  Fireman by Ramin Djawadi.  I warn you not to drive while listening as i fear it’ll make you think you ARE Iron Man and start driving like a wannabe super hero.  I will be starting my own pledge similar to Oprah’s “No Phone Zone”.  It’ll be “No Super Hero Music Zone” and i implore you to take it seriously.  You can however listen to this track while doing it.

3. I didn’t get sleepy Once: Perhaps it’s because i watched it at 10am while sucking back coffee and vegan peanut butter cups (thanks Ange) but while most action flicks make me fall asleep this one certainly did not.  Is that weird?  I can watch a Tarantino-esque dialog scene (read; long) any time of the day or night but as soon as the bullets start flying i tend to nod off.  Ok, i guess it does depend on the awesomeness of the movie.  Crank, no worries.  Black Hawk Down, zzzzzzzz.  Feel free to comment on how much BHD rules and i suck.  Whatev.

4. It didn’t really piss me off when the feisty, smart, and pretty journalist with a hate on for Tony’s bad business immediately falls into bed with him:  Normally this kind of sexism in “boy movies” pisses me off big time, but in this case, of course she did.  No mater how smart she was he has so goddamn fuckable!  Sorry for the bad language again.  It’s the only word i can think of right now.

5. Jeff Bidges has a cool voice: Right?!?!?

6. I like super hero movies where the super hero is a super hero because he’s (or she’s…) rich.  Not because they got bitten by something:  Confirms what i know to be true.  It’s rad to be rich.  This message is much more true than one along the lines of “money isn’t everything” or “it’s better to be loved than rich”.  Bullshit.  It’s best to be loved and rich.  And money isn’t everything, but it’s a lot.  Should i be spelling super hero without a space?

Shutter Island

There will be SPOILERS!  Go see the movie and come back 🙂

Not scary, somewhat interesting, and what was with Leo DiCaprio’s bandaid or whatever it was on his forehead?  This movie was made much more interesting after the fact when i went to imdb and read the message boards.  WOW there are a ton of sane arguments and just as many insane arguments.  I’m not sure what i think, so i’m going to chalk it up to know one will ever know except the writer.  And that’s good enough for me.
